Five new Hawker Masters honoured at the Asian Masters Gala Dinner

Desmond Lim also named as the inaugural Asian Masters ICON Award recipient

Singapore, 30 November, 2011 – The results of the second Singapore Hawker Masters 2011 were announced at the Asian Masters Gala Dinner this evening. Mr Desmond Lim, Chairman of the Les Amis Group, was also named as the recipient of the inaugural Asian Masters ICON Award at the same award ceremony.

The winners received their awards from the Guest-of-Honour, Dr. Vivian Balakrishnan, Minister for the Environment and Water Resources, at a ceremony at the Conrad Centennial Singapore.

The awards were presented to the winners during the Asian Masters Gala Dinner. Guests at the gala dinner were treated to a sumptuous five course meal prepared by the Singapore National Culinary Team. Asian Masters is a month-long celebration of Asia's cuisine, culture and lifestyle organised by Sphere Exhibits, a wholly owned subsidiary of Singapore Press Holdings (SPH).

In line with its objective of serving as a platform to showcase and celebrate Asia's culinary and lifestyle talents, Asian Masters initiated the Asian Masters ICON Award. This new award recognises and pays tribute to personalities who have contributed tremendously to the food and beverage (F&B) industry and changed the dining landscape of Singapore.

Candidates of the Asian Masters ICON Award must have made substantial contributions to the F&B industry in terms of grooming talents in the industry and heightened the profile of Singapore's food and beverage offerings in the international scene. In addition, they must have introduced new F&B concepts and/or refined existing concepts which improved both the variety and sophistication of the F&B landscape in Singapore.

Mr Chua Wee Phong, Executive Director, Sphere Exhibits, said: "The recipient of the inaugural Asian Masters ICON Award, Mr Desmond Lim, is more than deserving of the award.  He made a great impact on our local dining scene and paved the way for independent fine-dining restaurants. Under his guidance and leadership, Les Amis went on to become one of the best up-market restaurants in Singapore. Even till today, the Les Amis name is synonymous with high standards and exquisite cuisine."

Singapore Hawker Masters

Organised by the flagship newspapers of SPH, The Straits Times and Lianhe Zaobao, the Singapore Hawker Masters is an annual search for the best hawkers in various categories. Hawker Masters for different categories will be awarded each year. For this year, the categories were: Wontan Noodles, Fried Hokkien Mee, Satay, Bak Kut Teh, Roti Prata and Tau Suan.

The search for this year’s Singapore Hawker Masters kicked off in August this year. During the first phase, over 3,000 nominations were received from the public.

Following that, top nominees from individual categories were then listed for public voting during the second phase in September. Over 8,000 readers of The Straits Times and Lianhe Zaobao casted their votes to determine three finalists in each category.

The search culminated in October when a panel of eight judges visited the finalists’ stalls to determine who would take the honours of being named a Singapore Hawker Master.

The panel of judges included some of the Singapore’s most famous foodies:
- Professor Tommy Koh, Ambassador-at-large, Ministry of Foreign Affairs
- Mr Chia Boon Pin, President of Far East Food Concepts
- Mr Dennis Wee, Chairman of Dennis Wee Group
- Ms Violet Oon, Food Consultant
- Ms Tan Hsueh Yun, Deputy News Editor & Food Writer, The Straits Times
- Mr Wong Ah Yoke, Executive Sub-editor, The Straits Times Life!
- Mr Marcus Yeo Chuan Liang, Correspondent, Lianhe Zaobao
- Ms Tan Pin Yen, Features Editor, Lianhe Zaobao’s ZbBz.

Said Professor Tommy Koh: “The second edition of the Hawkers Masters take place soon after the good news that the Singapore government will build 10 new hawker centres and they will be run on a different governance model. I hope that one of the new centres will also function as a cooking school of hawker food."

Mr Danny Yeo, Assistant Vice-President of Branding and Promotions at SPH, said: "We started the Singapore Hawker Masters search to give deserving hawkers national recognition, with the hope that it will spur all hawkers to keep food standards up. Last years' winners were more clear cut. This year, it was not so obvious. There were much deliberations among the judges and some had to visit certain stalls a second time to reconfirm their verdict."
