Singapore, 1 Oct 2011 – Imagine talking a 4-kilometre walk by the scenic waterfront, through a mega family resort and ending with a party at the beach at Sentosa.
This is what The New Paper Big Walk is about this year as it moves the family-fun quotient a few notches up with a new venue and a whole lot more goodies.
With Resorts World Sentosa (RWS) as the Big Walk’s Title Sponsor, 18,000 lucky participants will get a rare chance to walk through the region’s first Universal Studio theme park and be greeted by its mascots and characters during the event at 7.30 am on Monday, Nov 7, 2011, which is a public holiday.
For the first time since 1991, this year’s event will give participants a scenic “off-road” experience. They will assemble and start from the waterfront promenade at VivoCity before taking a scenic walk down the Sentosa Boardwalk into RWS. At the integrated resort, participants will proceed to enter Universal Studios Singapore to enjoy a multi-sensory experience while strolling through each of the park’s seven uniquely themed zones. After that, they will follow a route that will enable them to have a first-hand view of the latest and soon-to-be-opened Maritime Experiential Museum and Aquarium (MEMA). The 4-km family walk will end at the nearby Siloso beach where more festivities await.
Apart from Resorts World Sentosa, The New Paper Big Walk is organised with the support from partners Sentosa Development Corporation, VivoCity, POSB, Gain City, Tenet Insurance, Denizen, Mount Faber Leisure Group and H-TWO-O isotonic drink.
This year, participants can expect to receive not one but two goodie bags which will be given during the registration as well as at the end of the event. At registration, participants will be given admission tickets to visit MEMA, RWS’s latest attraction and Denizen T-shirts.
To be opened on Oct 15, the MEMA is housed in an iconic steel and glass ship hull at the RWS waterfront and promises a new museum-going experience, boasting life-sized replicas of historical ships. A unique attraction within the museum is the Typhoon Theatre, a 150-seater, 360-degree multimedia theatre, where visitors are given the virtual experience of sailing through a roaring storm.
Editor of The New Paper, Dominic Nathan, said: "The Big Walk will deliver in a big way this year on its promise of being a mega family friendly event. It’s our way of rewarding our readers and keeping us connected to the community. See you all on Nov 7.”
Sharing similar sentiments, Mr Dennis Gilbert, Senior Vice President, Attractions, Resorts World Sentosa, said: “This is an excellent opportunity for families to come together for a wonderful day out and as a family destination, we are glad to be part of this event. We’re looking forward to welcoming all Big Walk participants with a visually spectacular line-up of attractions, including Universal Studios Singapore and our upcoming Maritime Experiential Museum & Aquarium.”
Launched in 1991, the signature Big Walk has transformed over the years from being just a competitive and fun walk to a mega family event which sees participants walking to exciting destinations. In 2008 and 2010, participants walked to the Marina Barrage and the Promontory at Marina Bay when the two locations opened then.
This year, 18,000 people will be invited to take part in the walk to Resorts World Sentosa.
Registration will begin on Oct 8 onwards and more details will be released in The New Paper later this week.
The registration fee is $32 each but participants will get a discounted rate of $28 each if they purchase family packs of four and above, or if they pay by DBS/POSB credit cards. They will receive the Denizen T-shirts, RWS Maritime Experiential Museum & Aquarium with Typhoon Theatre admission tickets plus numerous other attractive discount vouchers and gifts from the generous sponsors. The total value of the gifts and the discount vouchers exceed $100.
