Singapore, 29 September 2011 - Singapore Press Holdings (SPH) has been honoured with the Distinguished Patron of the Arts Award by the National Arts Council for the 19th consecutive year.
SPH was presented with the award by Dr Yaacob Ibrahim, Minister for Information, Communications and the Arts at an award ceremony this evening at the Goodman Arts Centre.
The Distinguished Patron of the Arts Award is the highest honour accorded to an organisation in support of the arts. SPH has been receiving this honour every year since 1983.
SPH's major arts sponsorships in 2010 covered a spectrum of genres ranging from music, drama, dance to literary arts. Some of the notable sponsorship projects by SPH included the popular SPH Gift of Music concert series, which brings quality music to the masses at the heartlands, shopping malls, campuses and parks. SPH continued to be the Silver Anniversary Sponsor of the Singapore Dance Theatre, a sponsorship which it has committed since 2008.
Radio 100.3, the Chinese language radio station of SPH UnionWorks, a subsidiary of SPH, also received the Distinguished Patron of the Arts Award this year. This is the second Distinguished Patron of the Arts award for Radio 100.3, which has been supporting local theatre groups such as The Theatre Practice and Drama Box in the publicity of their various productions.
omy.sg, SPH's bilingual news and entertainment portal, clinched the Associate of the Arts Award for its online publicity of Drama Box's theatre productions.
In addition, the SPH Foundation received the Arts Supporter Award at a separate award ceremony held two days ago (27 Sept 2011) at the Goodman Arts Centre. The Foundation was the Company Sponsor of Singapore Repertory Theatre's Little Company in 2010. This year, the SPH Foundation also set up the SPH Foundation Arts Fund to purchase tickets for the underprivileged to enjoy arts productions, as well as help the arts groups to reach out to a wider audience.
Ms Ginney Lim, SPH's Executive Vice President of Corporate Communications and General Manager of the SPH Foundation, said: "We are proud to be honoured once again for our unstinting support of the arts. Despite the uncertain economic climate, we stay committed to engage and enrich the lives of Singaporeans through our sponsorship of various arts projects. At the same time, we also created opportunities for local artists to showcase their creative talent and help make their art accessible to the masses."
