ST701 and Teck Wei develop iPhone app for buying, selling and renting cars

Singapore, 20 June 2011 – ST701, Singapore Press Holdings' e-marketplace for jobs, cars, property, shops and directory services,  has developed an iPhone application for Teck Wei, one of the leading car dealers in Singapore. This user-friendly application allows the user to buy, sell and rent cars with ease.

The prevalence of smartphones in Singapore, especially the iPhone, serves up advertising opportunities that sellers are keen to explore. It is precisely this phenomenon that spurred Mr Arthur Ong, Teck Wei’s Director, to create an iPhone application for his clients.

Mr Ong said: “Both the young and old alike are using iPhones. It’s easy to connect with people over the user interface, games and downloadable applications. Since the iPhone appeals to all ages, why not utilise the phone to market our products and services?”

In 2010, Teck Wei approached ST701 to kickstart the iPhone project. As one of the leading car dealers in Singapore that deals with a wide spectrum of motoring needs, Teck Wei had earlier commissioned ST701 for its corporate website. The cordial relationship between vendor and client and ST701’s resources and expertise were the reasons why Teck Wei decided to collaborate with ST701 on their mobile application.

Mr Alan Soon, Head of Online Business and Technology of ST701, said: “The ST701 team is dedicated in rolling out professional and customised online solutions. We not only optimise them to read into the buyers’ search behaviour, we also take into account innovative yet aesthetically pleasing user functionalities. The Teck Wei iPhone application is a big boost for ST701 in terms of our mobile development portfolio.”

Months of research and development led to the birth of one of the first motoring iPhone applications in Singapore at the beginning of 2011. To date, the Teck Wei iPhone application is nearing 1000 downloads and counting. The car dealer has seen its first client who has made use of the iPhone application to buy his dream car.

Mr Charles Quek, a 32-year-old SAF personnel who was impressed with the application and eventually bought his car using it, shared: “My friend introduced me to the application. I was pleasantly surprised that all the information I needed was literally at my fingertips! The best part was that the data was available wherever I went, a feature that bulky laptops lacked."

A quick search of “Singapore cars” in the iPhone application store produced only three search results. Two of them (Teck Wei and BW Automobile) were developed by ST701. This shows that mobile applications for vehicles, with the exception of government portals such as one.motoring.sg, are still new in the market and definitely has room to grow into a full-fledged advertising avenue.

About ST701
First launched on March 24, 2006 as a job portal, ST701 carries the initials of The Straits Times, Singapore Press Holdings’ flagship newspaper and Singapore´s national English broadsheet. The numbers “701” convey what the user will experience: 7 days a week search at the 01 place that matters.

In 2007, ST701 expanded its scope to include motoring, property and general classified ads, offering the full range of classified products and services to our valued clients.

In November 2010, ST701 took over the Directory and Search Engine Marketing (SEM) businesses from its associates. The former brings to users an efficient way to find fresh, relevant local business contacts and addresses on the internet while the latter offers a better integration of resources for businesses looking to boost their online presence.

Now ST701 comprises five verticals, namely: ST701 Jobs; ST701 Cars; ST701 Property; ST701 Shops; and ST701 Directory. Collectively, the five verticals make up Singapore’s leading online marketplace for classified advertisements.
