SPH Turns You ON!

Grand finals of "The Pitch" will be held during SPH's first large scale trade event to showcase multimedia marketing solutions

Singapore, 26 May 2011 – Singapore Press Holdings (SPH) today announced the three finalists for "The Pitch" - a reality contest that challenges advertising agencies to come up with their strategic and creative best through an integrated media campaign to pitch for a real account.

The three finalists are (in no order of merit):

- JWT
- BBDO/Proximity
- Bates 141


The three teams will meet at the Fairmont Hotel Raffles City Convention Hall on 2 June 2011 for the grand finals of The Pitch, where they will go all out to impress the judges with their ideas and cross-media recommendations to win the top prize – the “GOLDEN CLEAVER AWARD". Besides this unique trophy, the winning team will also walk away with $20,000 in cash and $250,000 worth of media credits from SPH.

A briefing for The Pitch was held earlier on 11 March at the SPH News Centre Auditorium. More than 180 advertising professionals from 80 agencies came to listen to the official brief for the account they were challenged to pitch for. In true ‘reality show’ style, the secret account was only revealed during the briefing to be Paragon, SPH's luxury shopping mall along Orchard Road.

A total of 27 entries from 24 agencies were received. >From these, six were short-listed on 6 April. The teams were then asked to return to SPH News Centre on 21 April to make a 45-minute presentation on their proposal. Of these, the top three were chosen as finalists for The Pitch.

"SPH IS ON" is a solutions based cross-media ideology that brings together the most-ideal combination of media products and services to satisfy advertisers’ multiple touch point requirements. The various media platforms owned by SPH have been grouped into six media activation "buttons", namely "On Print", "On line", "On Mobile", "On Ground", "On Air" and "On Screen".

Entries for The Pitch must effectively incorporate a cross-media strategy that engages a minimum of three “SPH IS ON” media platforms, with print being mandatory.

Mr Geoff Tan, Senior Vice President and Head of Strategic Marketing, SPH, said: "It was not easy to select the finalists as the competition was stiff and each proposal was unique in its own way. I'm confident all three teams will make compelling pitches on 2 June to an audience of more than 600 advertising practitioners. It will be a real thrill for everyone in the crowd to witness the inaugural Golden Cleaver Award being lauded on the winning agency team."


SPH Turns You ON!

The grand finals of The Pitch will be held as the highlight of the "SPH Turns You ON!" trade event. It is SPH's first large scale trade event where both advertisers and advertising agencies will get to experience SPH’s extensive suite of media and engagement platforms. More than 600 professionals from the advertising industry are expected to attend the trade event.

The keynote speaker for the event is Mr Mike Blinder, President of The Blinder Group, Inc, from the United States. He is a renowned cross-media exponent and consults for companies of all sizes, all over the world, on multimedia sales strategies.

Mr Blinder knows media advertising like no other. Once a well-known radio and television talent in Maine, USA, he moved out from behind the microphone and camera to excel in media sales. Today, over 350 media companies, including New York Times, Hearst, Gannett, Media News Group, the Canadian Newspaper Association, International Newspaper Marketing Association and WAN-IFRA are clients of The Blinder Group, which was founded by the man himself.

Mr Tan said: "Through this trade event, we want to “turn advertisers and agencies on” to what SPH has to offer across its comprehensive arsenal of media properties. We want to be their preferred ally and strategic partner – to be constantly ON-TRACK, definitively ON-STRATEGY, and always ON-CALL for them – bringing to their table the most creative, effective and cost-efficient marketing solutions."

Guests at the trade event will also stand a chance to win the latest iPad2 and Motorola Xoom tablets.

In the radio business, SPH has an 80 per cent stake in SPH UnionWorks Pte Ltd, which operates entertainment stations Radio 100.3 in Chinese and 91.3FM in English.


Events and Outdoor Advertising

SPH’s events subsidiary Sphere Exhibits organises innovative consumer and trade events and exhibitions. In addition, SPH has ventured into out-of-home (OOH) advertising through its wholly-owned subsidiary, SPH MediaBoxOffice Pte Ltd, Singapore’s leading Digital Out-of-Home advertising company.


Properties

SPH owns and manages Paragon, the prime retail and office complex in the heart of Orchard Road, Singapore's main shopping belt. Its latest retail development, The Clementi Mall, started business operations in 2011. SPH's wholly-owned subsidiary, Times Development Pte Ltd, has also developed a 43-storey upmarket residential condominium, Sky@eleven, at Thomson Road.
