Nearly 2,000 runners push their fitness to the limit at Singapore’s only urban-based, high-octane obstacle race.
Singapore, 20 February 2011 – Into its second year, the Men’s Health Urbanathlon, an endurance run organised by SPH Magazines and sports event management company HiVelocity today, received rave reviews from both participants and sponsors.
Engineered to be tougher than the race in 2010, this year’s event – with nine challenging obstacles over a 14km course – pushed the close to 2,000 participants’ fitness levels to the limit. However, despite the increased difficulty of the race, the runners were full of praise for its uniqueness and innovative formula.
Some of the new obstacles this year included Frame Works – a multilevel scaffolding structure through which runners had to manoeuvre, and The Network– a rope web placed over a 3.2m high lorry that participants had to climb.
Said Mr Raymond Goh, Group Editor of SPH Magazines which publishes Men's Health Singapore: “This year’s Urbanathlon has proven to be a hit again, and we’d like to thank the race participants for making it a bigger success than last year’s. Compared to last year’s race, we designed this year’s event to be more challenging, but at the same time also more fun. We’ll continue to improve the race, so participants can expect it to be even better in 2012.”
Mr Baey Yam Keng, Member of Parliament for Tanjong Pagar GRC, graced the event as Guest of Honour, flagging off the first wave of racers at 7.30am.
Beginning and ending at the Nicoll Highway MRT station, this year’s route took the runners into the heart of the Central Business District past the F1 Pit Building, the Esplanade, and new urban landmarks such as the Promontory and Marina Bay Sands.
Every runner was given a race pack worth over $400. And other than the bragging rights of having completed Singapore’s only urban race in Singapore, each finisher also received a finisher’s t-shirt and medal.
The top ten runners took home prizes worth a total of nearly $34,000. This year’s champion, Jason Lawrence, 29, won the race with a timing of 55 minutes 24 seconds. The New Zealander, who was also last year's winner, won over $13,000 worth of prizes, including a pair of SilkAir tickets to Kathmandu, Nepal (worth nearly $8,000), a Davidoff Champion hamper (worth over $2,000), and a Nautica watch (worth nearly $600).
Clinching the second place with a timing of 55 minutes 50 seconds was Jagat Bahadur Magar, 25, from Nepal; and 40 year-old British Mark Williams took third place with his timing of 56 minutes 31 seconds.
Jason Lawrence, who was in high spirits after winning the Men’s Health Urbanathlon 2011, said: “I’m delighted to have won two years in a row. It’s a really good feeling. This year’s race was definitely more difficult than last year’s, so it a greater achievement for me. On top of that, the prizes are also more attractive.”
He added: “I enjoy the Urbanathlon because it’s a really unique race, being Singapore’s only urban obstacle race. The toughest part for me was the monkey bars, so I trained harder for it this year. I’m really looking forward to next year’s race. I hope the course will remain the same; be just as tough. But if it gets tougher, it’s a good thing as well."
The excitement did not end after the race at the Finish Point. At the Finisher’s Area, participants got to cool down and wash up, recover with sports massage, take home a commemorative snapshot, and witness the prize presentation while enjoying complimentary beer and food.
