Singapore, 5 March 2018 --- SPH Gift of Music, a series of free community concerts sponsored by Singapore Press Holdings Limited (SPH), will return for the 14th consecutive year this month.
The popular concert series will feature a total of 13 concerts which be held at different locations across Singapore such as parks, heartlands, shopping malls, concert halls and Esplanade.
Joining the concert series for the first time this year are local groups The TENG Ensemble, MICappella and The Apex Project.
The TENG Ensemble is a renowned ensemble of musicians which marries traditional and contemporary music in innovative ways. The ensemble got a nod from Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong, who, during his National Day Rally speech in 2015, praised it for creating "something uniquely Singapore". The group has performed locally and internationally in cities such as Melbourne, Shanghai, Seoul, Manila, Hong Kong and Kuala Lumpur. Their album “Stories from an Island City” was awarded 4.5 out of 5 stars by The Straits Times in 2016.
Both MICappella and The Apex Project are award-winning a cappella groups in Singapore. MICappella picked up the Best Asian A Cappella Album at the 2017 Contemporary A Cappella Recording Awards (Cara) in the US. The Apex Project has scored many accolades, including Champion at the 2016 National A Cappella Championships (Singapore), Jury’s Choice at the 2016 Vocal Asia and Best Performance at the 7th Shanghai A Cappella Festival 2017.
These new groups will join regular partners of SPH Gift of Music in this year's line-up, including
the Singapore Symphony Orchestra (SSO), Singapore Chinese Orchestra (SCO), Singapore Lyric Opera (SLO) and Esplanade.
Kicking off this year's series will be the SSO at Gardens by the Bay on 10 March. Conducted by Associate Conductor Joshua Tan, the SSO will perform a string of classical favourites such as Beethoven's Symphony No.5 (first movement), Mozart's Symphony No. 40 (first movement), as well as memorable music from the Broadway musical West Side Story by Leonard Bernstein. This year also marks Leonard Bernstein's 100th anniversary. The SSO will also be performing again at The Straits Times Concert in the Gardens and a lunchtime concert at Victoria Concert Hall in July.
Other concerts in the line-up include SCO Community Concerts which will tour the various heartlands such as Jurong East and Hougang, Opera in the Park by Singapore Lyric Opera at Singapore Botanic Gardens, and two ethnic arts festivals -- Pesta Raya - Malay Festival of Arts and Kalaa Utsavam - Indian Festival of Arts at the Esplanade.
SPH Gift of Music was first launched on 1 May 2005 as a musical gift to the nation with a concert by the Singapore Symphony Orchestra at Singapore Botanic Gardens. Since then, it has gained popularity and helped many local musicians showcase their talent and expand their reach.
