This year, Her World honours veteran architect Angelene Chan and filmmaker Kirsten Tan, as its Woman of the Year and Young Woman Achiever 2017.
Singapore, 23 August 2017 –
Her World, Singapore’s No. 1 women’s magazine, published by SPH Magazines Pte Ltd (SPH Magazines), presented the Her World Woman of the Year and Young Woman Achiever Awards 2017 at Shangri-La Hotel Singapore tonight. Ms Grace Fu, Minister for Culture, Community and Youth, was the event’s Guest of Honour.
Her World, a monthly title for stylish achievers, prides itself on being the voice of the Singapore woman. For the past 57 years, it has engaged and inspired readers with exciting reads about dynamic women.
Her World has presented the Her World Woman of the Year award and the Her World Young Woman Achiever award since 1991 and 1999 respectively, honouring the achievements of women who are inspirational role models to other women.
The Her World Woman of the Year award recognises a woman whose outstanding achievements have brought her to public notice and earned her wide respect. She projects the best of Singapore at home and abroad, and her accomplishments will leave a lasting impression. She is an inspiration and role model to other women. Past winners include Professor Chan Heng Chee (1991), Ms Jennie Chua (1999), Madam Halimah Yacob (2003), Professor Ivy Ng (2011/12), Senior Assistant Commissioner of Police Zuraidah Abdullah (2015), and Dr Sudha Nair (2016).
The Her World Woman of the Year 2017 is Angelene Chan, 53, CEO of DP Architects. She is among the most well-known and respected faces in the architecture industry here, with over three decades of experience. She is also the first woman CEO among the top five architecture firms in Singapore. Angelene – whose work has been deemed exceptional, unique and refreshing – is behind the design of some of the most recognised structures in Singapore and beyond, such as the Singapore Flyer, Resorts World Sentosa, Wisma Atria and The Dubai Mall. She has been twice honoured with the prestigious President’s Design Award in 2009 and 2015, for her outstanding work.
Angelene, who is deeply humbled to be considered among those honoured before her, said: “Architecture is my passion. Being able to do what I love – to sculpt the building landscape and mould the environment that we live in -- is already privilege in itself. So, to receive this award for something that I already feel fortunate to pursue, is a double blessing.”
The Her World Young Woman Achiever award recognises a young woman whose achievements have surpassed existing boundaries, inspiring those around her and paving the way for others in the future. She has also demonstrated the potential for attaining a higher level of success in her chosen field.
This year’s winner is 36-year-old filmmaker Kirsten Tan, who is fast becoming one of the local industry’s most feted directors for her distinctly bold, visual storytelling that’s rooted in black humour. Kirsten has been making short films and documentaries for over a decade, and in that time, amassed over a dozen wins at film festivals in Singapore, the region, and beyond. Her debut feature film Pop Aye – which she wrote and directed – took three years to make, and was released to critical acclaim. The film also clinched a prize for screenwriting at the Sundance Film Festival, making Kirsten the first Singaporean to ever win at the prestigious event. Pop Aye also picked up an award at the equally well-regarded International Film Festival Rotterdam.
“I never set out to be an achiever. I didn’t know I could be one. I was merely single-minded in pursuing the thing I love – in my case, film – and though I fought hard for it, it is also my privilege to be able to pursue it. My wish is that the Young Woman Achiever award can mean something not just for me, but for every Singaporean girl who wants to do her own thing. She might be limited by circumstance, society, or an illogical fear that she isn’t good enough. She may not fit in, in the way she thinks, dresses, or behaves, but I want to tell her not to hold back,” said Kirsten.
Penelope Chan, executive editor of Her World, said: “Her World has always championed real-life super ‘she-roes’ – women who, through passion and sheer grit, push the boundaries and make breakthroughs every single day. We are extremely proud that many of our previous winners have gone on to make their mark in even bigger ways, and continue to make a difference in other people’s lives.”
Mr Loh Yew Seng, CEO of SPH Magazines, said: “Her World was one of the first local magazines to pioneer an award for inspiring women. The Her World Woman of the Year award remains one of the signature annual events for this empowering women’s title – which wholeheartedly supports the successful women of today and celebrates their achievements, in hopes of inspiring the next generation of leaders.”
The event was presented by BMW, Estee Lauder and YULI Inc Fine Jewelery.
