ST Press wins award in Best Non-Fiction Title category at Singapore Book Awards 2017

Singapore, 20 April 2017 - ST Press' biography of Singapore’s first post-independence Law Minister - E W Barker: The People's Minister - won in the Best Non-Fiction Title category at the Singapore Book Awards 2017 held this evening at the Pan Pacific Singapore. Ms Susan Long, General Manager, ST Press received the awards from the event's Guest-of-Honour Mr Tan Kiat How, Chief Executive of the Info-communications Media Development Authority.

The 428-page biography traces the life of Mr E W Barker and pieces together his deeds and achievements that were instrumental to Singapore’s formative years, from pre-independence to a thriving city-state. It was written by Ms Susan Sim, who was a former journalist and Indonesia Bureau Chief with The Straits Times.

Ms Long said: “It was a labour of love by Susan Sim, which took five years in the making, and the care and thought she took with the  research and writing shows."

ST Press, which is the book publishing arm of SPH, also had five other titles nominated in four categories.  They were Neither Civil Nor Servant: The Philip Yeo Story, What's Inside the Red Box, Kyoto Unhurried, From Kid to King: The Joseph Schooling story and LKY: Follow That Rainbow, Go Ride It.

Into its third year, the Singapore Book Awards are open to all book publishing companies in Singapore. The judging panel comprises writers, publishers, educators and those working in the industry.

The shortlisted books have to be in one of the four official Singapore languages and be published from 2 November 2015 to 1 December 2016. The books must have a Singapore ISBN number with hard copies legally deposited with the National Library Board and those in print must also be sold in retail stores locally and/or overseas.

The Awards are organised by the Singapore Book Publishers Association and was first held in 2012. It took a three-year hiatus and resumed last year.

Ms Susan Long, a former Straits Times columnist and editor, who took over as General Manager of ST Press in 2015, said: “We joined the Singapore Book Publishers Association only in 2015, so this is in a sense our inaugural year participating in the awards. We are committed to tell good stories and we are very proud of these titles and all the people who took the time to tell, craft, shape and polish these fine stories.”
