Three restaurants clinch Gold awards at inaugural The Straits Times and Lianhe Zaobao Best Asian Restaurants Awards

SINGAPORE, 31 March 2017 – Imperial Treasure Shanghai Cuisine, Shinji by Kanesaka at Raffles Hotel and VLV Singapore have emerged as the biggest winners of the inaugural The Straits Times and Lianhe Zaobao Best Asian Restaurants Awards, taking home the only three Gold awards bestowed at the gala reception.

Twenty-one other restaurants bagged Silver awards, while 30 were given Bronze awards. The full list of 54 winners (see Annex A) spanned a diverse range of Asian cuisines, and included both fine-dining establishments and casual eateries.

The annual awards marks the first collaboration between The Straits Times (ST) and Lianhe Zaobao (ZB) to honour the finest Asian restaurants in Singapore. Food critics from the two dailies, which are respectively the best-read English-language and Chinese-language newspapers in the country, selected the award-winning restaurants based on the quality of their food and service. The judging panel comprised The Straits Times Life Editor Ms Tan Hsueh Yun, Life Deputy Editor Mr Wong Ah Yoke, Lianhe Zaobao food correspondent Mr Marcus Yeo, and Ms Ng Yimin, a correspondent at the Chinese paper. The selection criteria can be found in Annex B. "The three Gold award recipients stand out for their exceptional food. These are restaurants I dream of returning to again and again", said Mr Wong.

“The restaurants given the Gold award represent the best of Asian restaurants in Singapore. They offer excellent food, whether classic or inventive, and are consistently good in an industry where many restaurants struggle to hit the right marks with every meal”, said Ms Tan.

“The awards shine the spotlight on Asian chefs and restaurants that are often overlooked in similar events. After all, we are in Asia and we have such excellent Asian restaurants here”, added Mr Wong.

“The ZB editorial team enjoyed putting together as we feel that is important to celebrate the finest in Asian Culinary. The list of awardees is a showcase of richness, diversity and boundless creativity of our culinary culture”, said Lianhe Zaobao Fukan Editor, Ms Woo Mun Ngan.

“Asian Masters has always been focused around promoting Asian cuisine, talents and produce since its very first edition. In the past year, we noticed that although there are multiple award platforms in Singapore, there is none that truly represents Asian restaurants which makes up a large segment of Singapore’s dining scene. The awards have been launched this year as part of the year-long Asian Masters series of Asian gastronomy events. Asian Masters is co-organised by Sphere Exhibits – a subsidiary of Singapore Press Holdings Limited, the parent company of The Straits Times and Lianhe Zaobao – and consultancy firm Poulose Associates, and presented by HSBC Cards. 

More than 200 guests, including leading professionals from Singapore’s food & beverage industry and representatives from winning establishments, attended the gala reception. The guests enjoyed a special menu prepared by the national culinary team from the Singapore Chefs Association that won the Culinary Olympics in 2016. Other sponsors of the event include Liuligongfang, Angliss, MHD, TWG Teas, e2i and Mandarin Orchard.
