Singapore, 30 March 2017 --- National Chinese Challenge (NCC), a nationwide Chinese language quiz for students, has set a new record with 1,700 students from 74 schools taking part this year.
The quiz, which is jointly organised by Singapore Press Holdings' (SPH) Chinese Media Group and Nanyang Girls’ High School, will kick off with preliminary rounds on 1 April. Last year, over 1,300 students from 65 schools participated in the quiz.
Back for the fourth year, the national quiz aims to promote Chinese culture and cultivate the interest in learning Chinese amongst students through a fun competition. The quiz allows students with a good grasp of Chinese language and culture to challenge themselves and pit their knowledge against one another for the championship trophy. It has both Primary School and Secondary School categories.
The competition will test participants on their knowledge of the Chinese language which includes translation skills of commonly used terms from English to Chinese, Chinese proverbs and idioms through pictures, pronunciation, literature, current affairs and general knowledge.
The top four schools with the highest scores from the preliminary round on 1 April will enter the semi-finals and finals on21 April. Each team will consist of four students, including one reserve participant. Only one non-Singaporean student is allowed in each team.
All participants at the preliminaries will enjoy 2 weeks of free digital access to SPH's Chinese publications including Lianhe Zaobao, Lianhe Wanbao and Shin Min Daily News.
NCC is co-presented by the Committee to Promote Chinese Language Learning (CPCLL), Industrial and Commercial Bank of China (ICBC), National Translation Committee (NTC) and Promote Mandarin Council (PMC) with MaxToon and Rings TV as partners, and Our Tampines Hub as the venue partner.
