Singapore, 4 March 2017 – Over 3,000 runners took part in the Men’s Health Urbanathlon – Singapore’s original obstacle race organised by SPH Magazines, today. Amongst them were over 20 celebrities, including Singapore’s leading radio personalities, who took on a multi-stage obstacle structure, the Urban Warrior course showdown at Ngee Ann City Civic Plaza. The biggest and toughest Men’s Health Urbanathlon to date, this eighth edition was the weekend’s most talked-about fitness event on social media. #RunDifferent, the theme of this year’s Urbanathlon, broke free of the common obstacle racing format and engaged participants with this brand new, unique running experience. Mr Kelvin Tan, Editor of Men’s Health Singapore, said: “This year’s Urbanathlon is our most social-media friendly one yet. Participants taking on the Urban Warrior course, with the backdrop of our iconic Orchard Road, were able to grab some of the most picturesque shots of their physical prowess for their Facebook and Instagram followers!”The ChallengeUrbanathletes went on a free-form running experience from Ngee Ann City and planned their own routes to the locations of four mega obstacle zones, over an estimated 12km course. Challenging both experienced Urbanathletes and newcomers alike, the obstacle zones comprised: Zone 1: Vertical Heights, at Tanjong Pagar Centre. A 37-storey vertical run up Singapore’s tallest building.Zone 2: Road Block, at the field opposite Marina Bay Financial Tower 3. Runners negotiated their way through a sea of shipping containers and barricades, testing their agility on obstacles such as Road Barricades, Tyre Ladder and Container Tread.Zone 3: Maze Runner, at the field opposite Golden Landmark. The first-ever maze running obstacle zone, where participants overcame obstacles such as the Monkey Bar, Tyre Swing and Pole Traverse to make their way out of the maze.Zone 4: Urban Warrior, at Ngee Ann City Civic Plaza. A brand new multi-stage obstacle structure with gruelling challenges that only the fittest Urbanathletes could complete. Runners negotiated the Quad Steps, Peg Board and Horizontal Salmon Ladder, before meeting the highlight of the Urban Warrior course – the Warped Wall, where they ran up a 3.6m high wall to claim their bragging rights as an Urban Warrior finisher. Star Power Galore at the UrbanathlonThis edition also saw celebrity challengers in a showdown against one another at the Urban Warrior, with Allan Wu and Ah Boys to Men stars Maxi Lim, Charlie Goh, Bunz and Noah Yap taking part, together with almost the entire stable of ONE FM 91.3 DJs, including Glenn Ong, Andre Hoeden, Shaun Tupaz, Shan Wee, Cheryl Miles, Elliot Danker and Harry Corro. Other participating celebrities included UFM 100.3 DJ Low Wei Loong, Singapore’s professional race car driving couple Yuey Tan and Claire Louise-Jedrek, Randall Tan, Adrian Jalaludin, Fiona Lim, Wallace Ang and Caleb Wong. While the wet weather may have made the Urbanathlon’s obstacles more challenging, it did not dampen the spirits of the participants, especially the celebrities. “It’s definitely tougher with the rain but it was a lot of fun for everyone, and also an added test of mettle,” said Allan Wu. The 44-year-old is certainly no stranger to some rough and tumble, thanks to his experience hosting the Amazing Race Asia.Maxi Lim, star of the Ah Boys to Men films, shared the same sentiment. “The Men’s Health Urbanathlon was a good opportunity for fitness enthusiasts to see how far they can push themselves. It’s also a good way for friends to stay fit together!” The 30-year-old was in good company at the Urbanathlon, competing with his fellow Ah Boys To Men stars Charlie Goh, Noah Yap and Bunz to see who could finish up first.It was not just the guys who took on the Urbanathlon with grit and gusto. Ladies like Claire Jedrek flew the feminine flag proudly. “I don’t think women were disadvantaged here,” she said. “I am a little short, so perhaps it would have been useful to be a bit taller like Allan Wu, especially when taking on the Warped Wall. The Men’s Health Urbanathlon is still my favourite running event – I’ll definitely be back next year!”Shaun Tupaz, 91.3 producer, was equally enthused about the Urbanathlon, but for different reasons -- his social media feed. “This event is the talk of the town because it was Instagram- and Facebook-worthy! It also helps that the obstacles were well-placed in the heart of Orchard Road.”Rewards at the Finish LineBut they were not the only ones inspired to be part of the Urbanathlon – ONE FM 91.3 DJs Melody Chen and Harry Corro were also broadcasting live at the race village, rocking the heart of Orchard Road with their brand of humour and music.The excitement did not end after runners completed their race. Interestingly enough, in line with the Men’s Health ethos of being “100% Useful”, finishers collected their medals that double up as beer openers. Their physical efforts were rewarded with complimentary beer and light bites at the race village, which also boasted exciting booth activities that entertained and provided opportunities to win more prizes. The Singapore Men’s Health Urbanathlon was jointly organised by SPH Magazines and HiVelocity, and was supported by Sport Singapore.
