Singapore, 23 February 2008 - Seventeen Singapore’s Body Peace Treaty launch, on Monday, February 25 2008, will have a strong celebrity presence, as personalities from the music, television, radio, theatre and sporting worlds band together to declare PEACE!
Seventeen Singapore, published by SPH Magazines Pte Ltd, is proud to have stars like Electrico’s Amanda Ling, Radio 91.3’s Rod Monteiro and Denise Tan, theatre veteran Hossan Leong, singer Paul Twohill, model/host Stephanie Carrington, and Team Singapore Sports Idols 2007/8 Deborah Ong and Tao Yi Jun, among others, grace the event to sign the Seventeen Body Peace Treaty in support of everything it stands for. At the launch, Paul Twohill will be singing his new single HERE I AM.
Says Sasha Gonzales, Deputy Editor, Seventeen Singapore: "We have chosen these personalities because they are very much a part of Singapore’s youth culture. Our youth recognise them, and are also familiar with their talents and achievements. But most importantly, these personalities possess a positive and healthy body image. Besides being active and fit, they project what we like to call ’body confidence’. In this respect, therefore, we feel that they are excellent examples for our local youth."
The Seventeen Body Peace Treaty is a very important component of the yearlong Seventeen Body Peace Project campaign. The aim of the Treaty is to inspire and encourage a positive body image among young girls (see attached image). The creator of this Treaty, Ann Shoket, editor-in-chief of Seventeen US, hopes to garner a million signatures for the Seventeen Body Peace Treaty by the end of the year. Celebrities in the US who have supported the Treaty include Pink, Ciara, Amanda Bynes, Carrie Underwood, Katharine McPhee, Ashlee Simpson, Fergie from the Black Eyed Peas, and Heroes´ Hayden Panettiere.
All 13 of Seventeen´s international editions (including Singapore) have adopted the yearlong Seventeen Body Peace Project campaign. In support of the project, Seventeen Singapore is proud to partner with Singapore General Hospital (SGH) to launch the Seventeen Body Peace Treaty locally during Eating Disorders Awareness Week (EDAW), from February 25 to March 1, 2008. The Seventeen Body Peace Treaty launch, on Monday, February 25 has been scheduled to kickstart EDAW.
The Eating Disorders Awareness Week (EDAW) is an outreach effort started in the USA in 1987 to teach people of all ages the importance of promoting positive body image as well as raising awareness about the dangers of eating disorders and the need for early intervention and treatment. EDAW is also a way for individuals to feel involved and effective in the fight against eating disorders. In addition to educating those at risk for developing eating disorders, each year the campaign reaches thousands of individuals struggling with eating disorders and their loved ones, helping them to access much needed treatment and support. Various events, public forums and workshops will be conducted on the hospital grounds during EDAW to raise awareness of eating disorders and weight and body issues.
